Color profile (ICC)

A color profile is a small data block embedded in an image that defines exactly which real-world colors its pixel values mean. sRGB is the universal default for the web; Display P3 is the wider-range profile iPhones and modern screens use. When a profile is missing or ignored, the same file shows different colors on different devices.

Why photos look washed out or oversaturated

A Display P3 photo interpreted as sRGB looks muted; an sRGB image forced through a wide-gamut screen without management can look oversaturated. Browsers handle profiles well; cheaper apps, older software, and some upload pipelines strip or ignore them - which is usually the culprit when colors shift after upload.

Practical guidance

For anything destined for the web, sRGB is the safe target: every browser and device renders it as intended. Keep wide-gamut originals for editing and print. Note that stripping metadata can include the ICC profile, so privacy-focused cleaning may subtly change how colors render on wide-gamut displays.
