HEIC

HEIC is the format iPhones use to save photos by default, storing images at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG with the same quality. Inside Apple's ecosystem it's invisible and efficient; outside it, Windows machines, websites, and upload forms frequently can't open it - which is why iPhone photos often need converting to JPG.

Why Apple uses it

HEIC is a container around the HEVC video codec's still-image mode, a generation newer than JPEG's 1992 compression. Better compression means thousands more photos fit in the same storage, so Apple made it the default from iOS 11 onward.

Living with it

iPhones auto-convert to JPG in many sharing paths (Messages, Mail), which hides the problem until you use USB transfer, cloud drives, or 'attach file' flows that send the raw HEIC. The fixes: convert files to JPG when needed, or set the camera to 'Most Compatible' (Settings → Camera → Formats) to capture JPG in the first place, at the cost of storage.
